Trolltunga

What did you do this 4th of July?

Written by Ray Hoogendijk on Aug. 1 2017.

ODR Mildenhall ascended an arduous path to reach the summit of a glacier climb in Norway this holiday so that they could experience one of the most beautiful climbs Norway has to offer.

Trolltunga is one of the most spectacular scenic cliffs in Norway. Being situated about 1,100 meters above sea level, it hovers 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The view is breathtaking. The hike starts in Skjeggedal and goes through the high mountains, taking 12-14 hours (23 km in total), with an ascent of about 900 meters. This long and arduous hike is usually possible only from mid-June, depending on when the snow melts in the mountains. Normally one can hike to Trolltunga through mid-September before snow makes the route unwise to traverse.

This being the very first Outdoor Recreation trip to Trolltunga, the meticulous planning took more than six months to complete. Our team researched various routes and financial options so they could deliver a cost-effective trip with a challenging yet achievable itinerary.

Trolltunga Outdoor Recreation Trip

USAF base Stavenger played a key role in enabling this trip. Their team kindly met us at the airport with our transportation and provisions. From there we made our way to our accommodations some four hours away via beautiful country roads surrounded by glaciers and breathtaking waterfalls and lakes. A day of bedding in, kit preparation and rehearsals prior to the assent meant the team was well refreshed before the adventure.

An early start on day three saw the team arrive at the base of Trolltunga. The first two hours of the climb were especially challenging as most of the elevation is achieved in the first part of the climb. The remainder of the assent was much easier and the team was able to attain the summit at the six-hour point. The Team then spent an hour at the summit taking pictures and relaxing with lunch before starting the six-hour descent.

Trolltunga was a truly amazing experience and the team at ODR will endeavor to rebook the trip for 2018. Anyone wishing to go on the trip next year should have previous hiking experience with RAF Milldenhall ODR, and are encouraged to contact Ray or C.J. soon.
